Former name of the Jiefang class is Mikai(MIKA-1). Meaning of the Mikai is the first locomotive of 2-8-2. The Mikai class was used wide as a locomotive for a standard freight in China and Korea. The first Mikai class was built by ALCO in 1918. After that, Japanese locomotive works and South Manchuria Railway works built this class. In People's China they built this class at the Sifang railway works in July 1952 as the first domestic productis of locomotive. The class name of this locomotive was renamed to the Jiefang class in commemoration of this. This locomotive was built until the Jianshe class appeared in early 1960's. During the Korean War, Japan built this locomotive on the order of the United Nations army.
