The Class 70 locomotives were 4-4-0 tender steam locomotives built by the Hyde Park Works of the North British Locomotive Company in Britain. Two were completed in 1908 and another two in 1909, for a total of four locomotives. They were initially used on express trains between Taipei (臺北) and Miaoli (苗栗), as well as on through trains south of Taichung (臺中). As later passenger locomotives in Taiwan became progressively larger, this class remained the only 4-4-0 tender-locomotive type used in Taiwan. Notable features included a Belpaire firebox and a tender with a single-bogie arrangement. The class was renamed B97 in 1938, and after the war it became Class BT40. One locomotive was withdrawn in 1950. The withdrawal dates of the remaining three are unclear, but they may have been among the 45 older locomotives listed as out of service in the 1961 Yearbook of Communications of the Republic of China. No examples have been preserved.
