Taiwan A→DK500 Steam Locomotive
The Class A locomotives did not belong to the Taiwan Government Railway. They were 0-8-0 tank locomotives used by the Civil Engineering Bureau for construction work. Twelve were built by Henschel in Germany between 1921 and 1926 for the construction of Wushantou Dam (烏山頭) as part of the Chianan Irrigation project (嘉南大圳). The exact number later transferred is unclear, but after that work was completed, some locomotives appear to have been moved to construction work at Niitaka Port (新高港), now Taichung Port (台中港), and were being used by the Army at the end of the war. Among the locomotives taken over after the war by the Taiwan Provincial Garrison Command Reception Committee were two D-type tank locomotives, and these are considered likely to have been this class. They then became the DK500 class of the Taiwan Railways Administration and are said to have been used for shunting. Their withdrawal dates are unknown, and no preserved examples survive today.
