This locomotive type in its first form was built between 1936 and 1938 by Kisha-Seizo, Kawasaki, and Hitachi, with a total of 95 locomotives. The locomotive numbers are D51 1-85 and 91-100. Because of its rounded smoke chamber door incorporating streamlined elements and its shape with a cover integrating the water supply warmer, sand box, and steam dome from the chimney, it was popularly called Namekuji (means slug). Currently, the D51 1 is preserved at the Kyoto Railway Museum, and 17 other D51s are in static preservation (refers to locomotives that are preserved in a way that does not allow them to be immediately operated, and/or that are simply on display). |
