D62 Aug. 1965 On Shizukuishi river brige (Offered by Yuhei Minato) |
This locomotive type was built to cope with the increase in freight traffic during the war. The D52's bogie was converted to a two-axle design to reduce the axle weight, allowing it to be used on lines with lower track strength. From 1950 to 1951, 20 D52s were converted into D62s at the Hamamatsu Works. It was the first locomotive with a 2-8-4 axle arrangement in Japan. Initially used on the Tokaido Line, they were later moved to the Tohoku Line, where they remained until 1966. Unfortunately, none of them are preserved. |
